Heart-Heart Foundation visited this island village with the actress, Yujin, last May and gave the solar lamps to villagers. Because they were too poor to make meals for each day, it was impossible for them to buy fuel oil for a lamp. The solar lamp is just a small thing in civilized community, but here it seemed to be world's greatest treasure.
|
Due to high price of oil, families in this village did not have even oil lamps. The children could not read books at night even though they wanted to, and their moms had to do house choirs in the darkness. Right now there is no problem to read a book and to work after sunset. Why?, They have SOLAR LAMPS provided by Heart to Heart Foundation! It is a gift more needed than anything for the people of this unnamed small island. At that night when we gave the solar lamps, they cried out "Donnabad", which means thank you in Bengali. The children who followed us around everywhere had big smiles on their faces. Their smiles lighted up our hearts brighter than the lamps in the village houses.

* The solar panels of the lamp collect sunlight to produce electricity and this lamp is eco friendly. Heart-Heart Foundation is planning to distribute about 3,500 solar lamps to the villages of developing countries like Tanzania, Bangladesh and Cambodia.
