Pediatric Eye Clinic at the Angkor Hospital for Children

There is only handful of ophthalmologists in Cambodia and eye disease is not known to most of the population.

Frequently, many people lose their sight due to a simple eye disease which can be treated easily. Heart to Heart Foundation started the eye care service in partnership with the Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) since 2011. We provide a variety of programs such as free eye surgery and consultation, establishment of eye clinic and installation of ophthalmic equipment, training of health center staffs and school teacher and capacity building of Cambodian medical team.
The construction of pediatric ophthalmic clinic in Angkor Hospital for Children was completed in December 2011. The purpose of the construction is to provide an independent ophthalmic clinic with a well-equipped operating room, treatment room, and recovery spaces for child patients. The clinic is free for all the patients and is visited by many patients living in different provinces as far as 300km away.
 
In March 2012, there was an opening ceremony, with 200 quests, staff, and patients to celebrate the new eye clinic.
 
Ophthalmic surgical training team, of Korean ophthalmologists, visited Cambodia and transferred pediatric ophthalmic surgical techniques to Cambodian ophthalmologists from March 21st to 23rd, 2012.
 

Dr. Chang-won Ki, the chief of ophthalmology Department at Samsung Medical Center and Dr. Jeong-min Hwang, the pediatric ophthalmologist of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital participated. Both ophthalmologists are also on the Blind Prevention Advisory Committee of the Heart to Heart Foundation. The Korean medical team transferred surgical techniques related to strabismus, cataract, and glaucoma and also held workshop on basic theory of ophthalmology for Cambodian residents.
Employees of Kuri Fruits & Vegetable Co., volunteered to educate children about eye health at seven local elementary schools in Cambodia from March 21st to 23rd, 2012. During the volunteer work, Kuri Fruits& Vegetable staff volunteers educated the students precautions of eye disease, and also provided Vitamin A, Multi-vitamin and nutritious food packages for eye health. After the volunteer work, the volunteers re-found the importance of eye care.
 
 
Heart to Heart Foundation is making an earnest effort to provide proper eye care services in Cambodia. We provide and the eye disease prevention program in the local areas and free eye clinic services in partnership with the Angkor Hospital for Children. Heart to Heart Foundation will continue children’s blind prevention program in Cambodia to improve the quality of children’s life.
