World Sight Day Campaign in Malawi

Heart to Heart Foundation is implementing the Trachoma Elimination Project in Machinga District, Malawi and the overall goal of the Project is to reduce trachoma prevalence through effective implementation of WHO-endorsed SFE strategies : Surgery, Facial and Environmental Improvement.

 

 




What is the 'WORLD SIGHT DAY(WSD)'?

 

World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October, to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment. World Sight Day 2015 was on 8 October 2015 and the 'Call to Action' for World Sight Day was "Universal Eye Health/Eye care for all".






'World Sight Day(WSD)' in Malawi

 

Ministries of Health and Education, with support from Heart to Heart Foundation Malawi, conducted World Sight Day Commemoration at Msalabani FP School on 14 Oct 2015.
Basically, the activity was centered on disseminating trachoma prevention messages to learners as well as people(communities) surrounding the targeted schools. The event was patronized by district officials from government departments such Health, Education, Water Development, Social welfare and other NGOs like PDI, MACOHA and other WASH stakeholders.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Prior to the event day, task force was given a responsibility of championing the execution of the activity was formulated. It held a series of meetings to discuss strategies of successful implementation of this activity. It also visited the site to check if planned activities were in order.

 

 

 

 

 

 

On the commemoration day, there were a number of performances done by learners such drama, choir and quiz just to mention a few. In all these performances, the message disseminated to people was about good hygiene practices in order to prevent them from catching trachoma
Over 2000 people from the surrounding villages attended the WSD ceremony as well as school learners. And schools were distributed of goods for trachoma prevention like hand washing facilities and detergents.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The press, ‘The Nation’ and One of radio programs in Malawi requested an interview about this ceremony. ‘The Nation’ issued related story on their newspaper on 20th Oct 2015. It also contributed greatly to announce this agenda to many people in Malawi.
