“Clean Hands for All”

The Hand Washing Campaign

 

On 22nd October, Heart to Heart International, Tanzania branch celebrated Global Hand washing Day dedicated to raising awareness of sanitation and hygiene among students and community people. The slogan of hand washing campaign of this year was ‘Clean Hands for All’, meaning is to promote people in washing their hands at critical time. The campaign was held at Madangwa Primary School in Lindi District where by various performances groups from primary school, secondary school and village were invited, as well as Lindi District Authorities such as Village Leaders, Health and Education Officers, and School Sanitation Club Students. The guest of honor in the hand washing campaign was District Commissioner Hon. Shaibu Ndamanga.

Commenced with opening ceremony by Madangwa Village cultural group, sanitation clubs students from Madangwa, Narwadi, Kipingo schools performed dance, song, and drama to disseminate messages on the importance of sanitation and hygiene to the community. Especially, Kipingo primary school students showed a drama onto delivering health impact of open defecation practice on the transmission or pathways of waterborne diseases. During the event, seven steps of hand washing were also demonstrated along with the distribution of educational materials (leaflet, posters and T-shirts). As a result, all participants had a meaningful time to learn the importance of improving hygiene practice and preventing waterborne diseases.

Furthermore, during hand washing campaign seven schools selected as SLTS (Schools Led Total School) Best School Awarded. Those 7 schools received high marks for good hygiene education and maintenance of school environment were selected as the best school in 2019 and invited to be awarded with gifts. SWASH (School Water, Sanitation and hygiene) teacher Ms. Mshiko from Kipingo primary school with the highest score amongst 36 schools was delighted and promised continuous efforts to motivate students and promote hygiene awareness in school.

The campaign was concluded by closing speech by District commissioner (Mr. Shaibundemanga). He emphasised the efforts to wash our hands at critical times in order to improve our hygiene and sanitation and prevent waterborne diseases.
