Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world,
has seen a steady increase in the number of COVID-19confirmed here and in the community. However, there is a significant shortage of preventive supplies as well as Corona 19 diagnostic kits, leaving medical staff and community residents at risk without any preparation for the Corona 19 virus. The Heart to Heart International's Malawi branch has decided to provide emergency COVID-19 supplies to medical staff and community people in Machinga District, and with the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency, it has distributed preventive goods for 21 health centers such as hand sanitizers, soaps, masks, and washing facilities with foot pedal and for Machinga hospital’s medical staff such as medical gowns, medical goggles and gloves. On 9th June, HtHI Malawi branch provided preventive items to hospital and each health center and held a ceremony to celebrate the handover to encourage active support for COVID-19.
Preventive supplies have enabled medical staff to be safe and community people to protect themselves from COVID-19. Boyce Nyirenda, Country Representative of the HtHI Malawi branch, who attended the ceremony, said it was very important for community people themselves to follow preventive measures such as washing hands with soap, wearing masks, and keeping social distance.
Dr. Kapachika, Director of Health Services for Machinga District, said “As the days went by, concerns about COVID-19 were growing. At this time, there was no better gift than this in this difficult time. The HtHI is our 'true and trusted friend'. Thank you for your support."
* As part of the Korea International Cooperation Agency's public-private partnership project, the HtHI Malawi branch is carrying out a WASH improvement project in Machinga district in Southern Malawi from 2019 to 2021, and has been carrying out activities in various fields, including improving drinking water and sanitation conditions, improving hygiene awareness, supporting preventive goods and medicines, and strengthening stakeholder capabilities.
