From 25-28 October 2021 and from 01-04 November 2021, for 8 days, Heart to Heart Foundation Cambodia carried out training sessions to improve health center workers’ capacity in diagnosis, counseling on diabetes and hypertension based on the WHO Package of Essential Non-communicable diseases in primary health care (WHO-PEN).
NCD is a sufficiently preventable disease through early screening. Accordingly, it is important to detect and treat NCD early in primary health facilities close to the community. Therefore, the importance of this education is very emphasized.
The main topics were as follows: ‘Understanding of WHO-PEN and NCD’, ‘Protocol of Diagnosis and treatment of hypertension and diabetes on primary health care level’ and ‘Prevention and healthy lifestyle of NCD’. In addition, with the cooperation of Cambodian health authorities, Batambang Provincial Referral Hospital(PRH) doctors and doctors from the Ministry of Health(MoH) were invited as instructors. Forty-two primary health workers will return to each health center and provide appropriate screening and referral service on NCD to the community with cooperation with the Heart to Heart Foundation Cambodia and the NCD Center, which was installed and operated in the Thmor Kol Operation District. As a result of training pre-testing/post-testing for educational participants, all participants have reported increased knowledge on NCD prevention and control. Group 1: Pre-test score rate 40%, Post-test score rate is 90% (50% increased.) Group 2: Pre-test score rate 46%, Post-test score rate is 97% (51% increased.) Mrs. Luon Kinnoun, chief of Klaingmeas health center expressed her feeling “I’m so happy to participate this training and interesting in these topics because it is very important to help my community health. I will use my knowledge from this training to support my community.”

Doctor Voeurng Bunreth, Battambang Provincial Health Department director expressed his feeling “As the mention during closing remark of the training that NCD, the diabetes and hypertension topic are very important for all health centers, I hope all participants can use this knowledge to treat people in your community with high responsibility.” Heart to Heart Foundation Cambodia will continue to provide quality education to health workers to prevent and manage NCD and promote community health. Heart to Heart Foundation Cambodia hopes that residents will prevent NCD and lead a healthy life through education for primary health personnel. Heart to Heart Foundation Cambodia has been implementing the ‘Project to Community-based Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in Battambang Province, Cambodia’ as a part of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA)’s Civil society Partnership Program and with the support of Community Chest of Seoul and Atinum Investment Co., Ltd to secure the well-being of community residents by reducing the burden of NCD.
